West Coast LEAFs next Gender Equality Report card will assess BC’s progress in advancing gender equality from January 2021 to December 2022 and will focus on two key areas: economic security and access to health care.
As we were finalizing our 2020 Gender Equality Report Card, COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. We saw that discussions of government responses excluded the very communities that are bearing the brunt of this public health emergency. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed that racialized women and people of marginalized genders face distinct, disproportionate threats to safety, health, and economic security, while simultaneously leading frontline health, service, and caregiving responses.
The Report Card is a key avenue for the work necessary to bring about a more equal and just world: those closest to the harms have the solutions. The upcoming Report Card will put those voices at the centre of law, policy, and program development for gender equality.
The project will produce advocacy and monitoring tools to hold the BC government accountable for respecting the human rights of women and/or people who are marginalized based on their gender identity or expression. We will be sharing key human rights and gender justice issues in the province, the actions that have been taken by the provincial government, and the areas where action is overdue.
The upcoming Report Card will centre the firsthand knowledge generously shared by members of four community organizations. It will also be strengthened by reflections and feedback from community reviewers. Be sure to check back here soon for more information about our partners.
Thank you to our funders and volunteers!

COVID-19 Gender Equality Report Card. On December 10th, 2020 (Human Rights Day), West Coast LEAF published a special edition of the Report Card evaluating BC’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
