Poverty is a women’s issue too

BC has had the highest poverty rate in Canada for the last 13 years. We wrote a letter to Premier Clark about the proposed Bill M212, the Poverty Reduction and Economic Inclusion Act.

Here’s what you can do to support a poverty reduction strategy in BC: go to the BC Poverty Reduction Coalition’s website and send YOUR own letter to the Premier!

Stephanie Cadieux: re-open the Victoria Youth Custody Centre

We wrote a letter to the Minister of Children and Family Development asking the government to reconsider its decision to close the Victoria Youth Custody Centre, and to engage in appropriate consultations with affected parties to determine a new course of action.

In particular, we urged the Minister to repurpose the unused portions of the Victoria Youth Custody Centre to house women being held on remand, in line with the resolutions passed by a number of Vancouver Island municipalities. There’s also a petition calling to reverse this decision that you can support.

Dear women of BC: help is available

Advocates working to end violence against women want women to know that help is available. Responding to the recent spate of murders of women by their former partners, members of the Jane Doe Legal Network wrote an op-ed for the Vancouver Sun.

The Jane Doe Legal Network is a group of frontline anti-violence organizations. West Coast LEAF is also part of the Network.
